Internet Online Course
Lesson 2 - What is the Internet?
Before
we mentioned that the Internet is the largest computer network in
the world, connecting millions of computers. It consists of the physical
equipent such as the computer, servers, monitors, modem, cables and
phone lines. These computers can exist as part of a Local Area Network
(LAN) or Wide Area Network (WAN). The computers on the Web communicate
using standard protocols and languages.
Local
Area Network and Wide Area Network
Local
Area Network (LAN): A LAN is two or more connected computers (the
same building, for example).
Wide Area
Network (WAN): A WAN typically consists of 2 or more LANs. The computers
are farther apart and are linked by telephone lines, dedicated telephone
lines, or radio waves
Clients
and Servers
All
computers on the Internet (a wide area network, or Local Area Network)
can be lumped into two groups: servers and clients. In a network,
clients and servers communicate with one another.
Servers
are commonly used to store software and applications that are shared
among users. One example of the use of a server would be many users
sharing the use of one printer in a network. Many servers are dedicated,
meaning they only perform specific tasks.
