Internet Online Course
Lesson 1 - Introduction to the Internet- A brief history
The Internet is the largest computer network in the world, connecting
millions of computers. It consists of the physical equipent such as
the computer, servers, monitors, modem, cables and phone lines.
The first users of the Internet were the military who, in 1969, created
what is known as the ARPAnet which allowed
researchers and military personnel to communicate
with each
other
in the case of an emergency.
During the 1970's and in the early days, the Internet was mainly used
by military personal and universities. It was not until the early 1990s
that the World Wide Web was invented by Tim Berners-Lee, a software
engineer, and changed all this. Since this time, the Internet and World
Wide Web has gradually grown to what it is today - a network of over
75 billion users and growing every day. Most of us today could not
imagine what life was like without it.
The Internet consists of many applications that we take for granted
today such as the World-Wide Web. Electronic Mail (E-Mail), File Transfer
Protocol (FTP), Internet Relay chat (IRC) better know as Chat, and
USENET (a news service). We'll look at these applications in more detail
in lesson xx.
